Galileo, in the throes of inspiration, invented the first pendulum in 1602. Never completed, Galileo’s invention inspired the work of Dutch scientist and inventor, Christiaan Huygens. It was Huygens who took Galileo’s singular vision and completed the work he’d started, giving birth to the world’s first pendulum clock in 1656.
Galileo’s restless mind is the one which connected the action of the pendulum to the act of keeping time. While the great Galileo didn’t live to complete his invention and see it to fruition, Huygens is responsible for building on his vision, creating a contemporary wonder of accurate timekeeping.
In the 21st Century, with its breakneck technological change, wonders like these are believed to belong to another time. Pendulum clocks can’t be moved, lest the action of the pendulum be disturbed.
There is a romanticism inherent in the pendulum clock’s limitations which makes it a whimsical and beautiful addition to any home or work space. A thing of the past, perhaps, but also a thing of intense fascination.
The modern fascination with pendulum clock art continues to inspire those who take pleasure in an object which is both simple and complex in equal measure. The action of the pendulum is a naturally-occurring one, but the introduction of time-keeping harnesses that action to create an almost eerie accuracy.
